Years 3 and 4 Experience History Brought to Life with Durham University Workshop

Years 3 and 4 had an exciting and educational visit from Durham University this week, where history truly came to life during an incredible interactive workshop!

Years 3 and 4 took part in an Stone Age and Anglo-Saxon workshop by Durham University as they brought their interactive history classroom. This hands-on session transported the pupils back in time, offering a unique and exciting way to learn about the Stone Age and Anglo-Saxon periods.

The workshop began with an overview of life during these historical periods, setting the stage for what turned out to be an immersive day. Pupils eagerly took part in activities that showcased the day-to-day life and culture of ancient communities. One of the highlights of the session was the chance to write with feather and ink pens. This activity not only allowed pupils to experience a form of communication from the past but also gave them a new appreciation for the challenges of writing before the invention of modern pens and paper.

Another favourite of the pupils was the exploration of ancient artifacts. Pupils handled replicas of tools and items used by people in the Stone Age and Anglo-Saxon times. This helped them better understand the craftsmanship required for survival and daily life during these eras.

Pupils had an exciting opportunity to dress up as Anglo-Saxon warriors. Wearing tunics, shields, and helmets, they took on fierce warrior poses and imagined what life would have been like for soldiers defending their communities.

Pupils asked thoughtful questions, keen to learn more about the people and events that shaped early human history. Many expressed a newfound fascination with history by the end of the workshop.

This enriching experience left pupils filled with knowledge to share. Thanks to Durham University’s expert guidance, Years 3 and 4 gained a deeper connection to the past—making history feel more alive than ever before!
